Life is either a daring adventure, or it is nothing. Helen Keller
So, with that in mind, we have made the decision to take an adventure! You may be able to take the boy out of TEXAS, but you'll never be able to take TEXAS out of the boy. I hope they don't find me too arrogant in Alaska and kick me out of the state. If they do, I'll guess I'll come home. I'll always be a proud Texan, but I've come to the conclusion that it is now time to get out of my comfort zone. After we get settled we hope that ya'll (gotta keep it Texan) will come to visit. I will always have that Texas hospitality and ya'll will be welcome anytime. Some have already made a commitment to visit (in the summer) (ha, ha) It was not an easy decision to come to. After much prayer and checking out tons of info about Fairbanks and Alaska, we feel that this is where God is calling us at this time. At a minimum we will be there two years, but you can bet at Fiesta time WE WILL BE IN SAN ANTONIO! Please keep us in your prayers. I love ya'll! Until we meet again. VIVA SAN ANTONIO!

Making the decision to go
So the adventure begins..
Ray began applying for biomedical technician positions last year. He applied for so many, we've lost count! When he applied with the Banner Health Care System it was for 8 positions. 7 in Arizona and 1 in Alaska. He joked at the time that Fairbanks would be the one calling.
And they did. Just a couple of weeks later. Two interviews, countless hours searching the internet for anything and everything on Fairbanks, and endless questions answered by a very patient HR recruiter...and we made the very difficult decision to go. It was the only offer on the table by the contract signing deadline. We had no real reason not to give it a try.
Yes, Fairbanks. As in Alaska--"the last frontier" of our great nation. The "Golden Heart" city. The land of the midnight sun and -50 degree weather?!
Now we both have sensed a calling of some sort for some time. Unbeknownst to us at the time, we began preparing for this adventure in 2004/2005 when we decided to take part in a Lay Leadership course offered through Mission Presbytery. We followed that by taking Perspectives On the World Christian Movement course offered at First Presbyterian Church in 2006. In between, I served on the team that went to the Dominican Republic (La Meseta) in '04 and we both went to St. Petersburg, Russia in '06. We've also been blessed to have taken part in numerous trips to Acuna, Mexico.
For a couple of years, our friend--Trent Timberlake--invited us to join him on the mission to St. Petersburg. I resisted. "I don't do snow. I'm not a cold-weather gal," I said. The weather couldn't have cooperated any better in StP. We only saw snow on the ride to the airport, the morning we departed.
Guess God's making up for all the lack of snow in my life.
Stay tuned..
